The
Ghana black stars remains one of the most prosperous teams at the African Cup
of Nations which have won the competition on four different occasions.
The
first title was won in 1963, followed by another triumph in 1965 in Tunisia,
when the Black Stars defeated the host 3-2 after extra time.
The
stars had massive dominance in that era and went ahead to win the third and
fourth trophies in 1978 and 1982 respectively.
The
domination gradually declined in subsequent tournaments, seeing the national
team go trophy less for 40 years now.

This
has divided some of the fans of the black stars, with some casting doubt over
the quality of the team and some others hoping the team wins the 2022 tournament.
“For
the current crop of players, I’m sure they all want to win something because it’s
been very long and they want to prove what they are worth. As you can see, the
old players were not able to bring the cup home even though they went to the
final so I’m sure these young boys will do it,” One supporter said.
“We
are not playing any kind of attractive and solid and convincing football. Since
2010, I’ve been watching and I started losing hope so i stopped following and I
don’t think in the upcoming AFCON, we can even make it to the semis,” another
supporter said.
However,
Head of Communications at the GFA Mr. Henry Asante Twum has revealed that the
team is well positioned to win the fifth trophy because the FA have provided the
team what it takes to win the trophy.
As
far as we are concerned, you need all your players to be fully fit, you also
need to put packages together to motivate your players and I think we are on a
good path in that direction. You need a sound technical team to be able to
mastermind your campaign and for us Milo has come in, he has a strong backroom
staff with the likes of Maxwell Konadu and Otto Addo with him and Richard Kingston”.
